The Duquesne Dukes represent Duquesne University in college basketball. The team, which started in 1914, has only ever played in NCAA Division I and has had five appearances in the NCAA Tournament. The Dukes play in the Atlantic 10 Conference, of which they have been members since 1976. Duquesne University is located in Pittsburgh’s uptown corridor in an area known as the Bluff. Duquesne’s 43-acre hilltop campus, located some 115 feet above downtown Pittsburgh, offers impressive views of the Monongahela River, South Side, Mt. Washington and downtown Pittsburgh. It is also within easy walking distance to the cultural, recreational and commercial amenities of downtown. The Bluff is a diverse community, made up of long-time residents, university students, health professionals, and downtown workers who like the convenience of the neighborhood. Some early Duquesne University sports teams were referred to as “Bluffites” and/or “Hilltoppers” in reference the perch DU occupies high above the City of Pittsburgh.
