Movies filmed in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh has been the location for more than 120 motion pictures and television productions since 1990. Hollywood film crews are drawn to Pittsburgh for its endless variety of architecture, neighborhood charm, and great local support crews. More than 50 major movies and films have been shot on location in the Pittsburgh area during the past decade, including the Academy Award-winning Silence of the Lambs, Lorenzo’s Oil, and Hoffa.

Slap Shot, 1977 starring Paul Newman. Easily the best hockey movie ever made.

The Deer Hunter, 1978 starring Christopher Walken, Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep.

Flashdance, 1983 starring Jennifer Beals. It won an Oscar for best song. Even today the

famous “water splashing on the dancer” scene is a direct tribute to this film.

Gung Ho, 1986 starring one of our own locals, Michael Keaton. While this movie wasn’t huge

financially, it was a respectful nod to the steel industry’s past in the region, and provided a sense

of possibility that the Japanese cars arriving on our soil wasn’t such a bad thing afterall.

RoboCop, 1987 starring Peter Weller. Just a hardcore movie for the time. Was actually

rated “X” for it’s brutal scenes of violence before the directors toned it down to get the “R” rating

instead.

The Silence of the Lambs, 1990 starring Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins. Not only one of

the best films made in Pittsburgh, but one of the best films ever made.

Groundhog Day, 1993 starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell. I have to confess that the
first time I saw this movie, I thought it was terrible. But thanks to TBS and re-runs, this movie

grew on me and I now appreciate all the charms this movie displayed.

Diabolique, 1996 starring Sharon Stone. Ok, not really a great film (compared to the original),

the only reason this film gets listed is that for one day, I got to help with the lighting on the set!

Kingpin, 1996 starring Bill Murray, Woody Harrelson and Randy Quaid.

She’s Out of My League, 2010 starring Jay Baruchel and Alice Eve.

The Dark Knight Rises, 2012 starring Christian Bale.
