Schwartz Living Market

An Urban Oasis for Healthful Living. New hours 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM Tuesday through Saturday! Go to 1317eastcarson.blogspot.com for details. Over the centuries, the historic South Side, once an old growth riparian forest, has turned into a bustling town. Helen and Morris Schwartz opened the Schwartz Sanitary Market in the 1920’s (originally housed at 1505 East Carson Street, the current site of the newly renovated Beneficial Building). In 1938, the Market moved to 1317 East Carson Street to expand the business and was eventually renamed Schwartz Market. The back part of this building was a car dealership, with solid floors that held countless Model T Fords and other mechanical relics. Over the life of this building, the Schwartz Market changed hands and faces, being passed down through the Schwartz family, then eventually to the Dorfners and Stantons, and now to the Becks. At the heart of this historic building is the story of food and community, of immigration and localization. Now, we are moving into a new era and recreating the Market as the Schwartz Living Market, modeling a new way of connecting with food and community. The reinvention of the Schwartz Living Market is an evolving collaborative process of creating An Urban Oasis for Healthful Living. Our goals are to help move the building, neighborhood, and City into a resilient and regenerative future that supports environmental harmony, social equity, and personal and community empowerment and prosperity. Once complete, this Living Building will be a model of health and abundance, housing a sanctuary for the community, a safe place for physical, mental, and spiritual exploration, expression, and education through positive co-created experiences. This creative process is inspired, influenced, and driven by community participation. We invite you to engage with us. Be a part of the future! Burgh Man absolutely loves The Schwartz Living Market. I am so excited to have such a caring, sharing and healthful venue in The Burgh. Now I can get my wheatgrass juice, health books, organic food and interact with visionaries. Actually, Burgh Man may make this one of his other Secret Headquarters. You must visit this Pittsburgh Treasure! ~~ Burgh Man
